What are Omega-3 Essential Fatty Acids in Liquid Fish Oil?
The two key fatty acids are eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and
docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). EPA and DHA are essential
fatty acids, essential meaning they can't be produced by the body
and, therefore, must be supplied through our diet.
Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) is a longchain omega-3 fatty
acid that inhibits
the formation of arachidonic acid (AA)
Arachidonic Acid (AA) is a long-chain omega-6 fatty acid that
is the
immediate precursor to inflammation
Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) a long-chain omega-3 fatty acid is
critical for
brain function.
Manufacturing the Fish Oil
It's very difficult to remove the toxins out of fish oil. That's why most fish oils sold in health-food stores and supermarkets should be considered the "sewer of the sea." Since the contaminants in fish are oil-soluble, all the toxic contaminants are concentrated in the crude fish oil. Not a very appealing thought if you are taking fish oil for its "health" benefits. Obviously, all crude fish oil is highly contaminated. If you do some minimal processing, you can get rid of the mercury, but not the PCBs and dioxins.
